What Can Cause a Dead Battery?
Nobody ever intends to have their routine hindered by a vehicle that won’t start, and there are several things that can be done to help prevent your battery from dying. Extreme temperatures could reduce the life of your battery. During the heat, park your vehicle in the shade. In cold weather, park in a garage if possible. When you turn on your vehicle while it is cold, wait a couple of minutes before you turn on the lights and radio. This allows the alternator to charge your battery before placing any additional demands. Excessive short trips with lots of stops don’t allow your alternator to fully recover power. To prevent this, take longer drives. Doing these things help keep your battery in top performance and less likely to need a jump start.
Things to Check on Your Battery
If your battery not holding a charge is a common issue, there could be a few possible reasons. Check to see if the cables leading up to your battery are old or frayed. If they are, they need to be replaced. Another thing is corrosion on the battery connections. Corrosion prevents contact with the battery and needs to be cleaned off using a battery brush. An old battery is also a possible cause for needing to be charged frequently. Typically a battery needs to be replaced every three to four years and if your battery is past this age, that is more than likely the issue.
Bigger Issues
Sometimes a dead battery is a sign of a more serious issue such as a defective alternator or faulty charging systems. If it is one of these causes and Hi-Way Towing is unable to jump start your vehicle, they will safely tow your vehicle to a mechanic to get serviced.
Human Error
Often times, a dead battery is due to human error. You get home from work after a long day and forget to turn the headlights off or you don’t shut the door all the way. Many vehicles have notifications to prevent things like this, but sometimes alerts don’t override an exhausted brain.
